Communication between patient and clinician is a key aspect of quality care. But how that communication occurs, and what rights and responsibilities it allows, varies widely. Manual therapy is traditionally dispensed from the "clinician-as-expert" model, which has stood the test of time and been shown to be effective. But how does that model allow patient input for decision-making? In my years of training in various models, patient input is not seen as a primary driver for treatment decisions, as the "expert" knows what to do. I believe we can allow more space for two-way communication to be a determinant of intervention decisions, and make this the focal point in my therapy and teaching.
Learning this communication and shared decision-making approach is not about learning a new modality, but rather about discovering a clearer way to communicate using touch and language, and it can be applied to all interventions.
