Residents are remaining alert with Tropical Cyclone Alfred currently tracking above the Coral Sea around 450 kilometres north-east of Brisbane.
The cyclone did strengthen overnight to a category 2 system and may make landfall on either Thursday or Friday later this week.
Large waves have already been hitting some Queensland beaches with emergency crews preparing for rainfall and potential damage.
