Ann Farley (1820–1901) and her family established the iconic Farley’s Rusks in Plymouth, UK, transforming a 19th-century baker's shop into a major infant food producer. Originally producing specialized biscuits for a local surgeon in the 1870s, the company moved to 7 Exeter Street, later expanding to a large factory in Peverell before being acquired by Glaxo in 1968.
History of Ann Farley and Farley's Rusks:
Origins (1850s–1870s): The business began in 1857, run by Samuel Farley, but it was his wife, Ann Farley, who played a key role in the baking, with the shop located at 90 Cambridge Street, Plymouth.
The Recipe Development: In the late 1870s, Dr. William Eales of Plymouth asked Ann Farley to bake a special, nutritious, golden-brown teething biscuit for infants.
Family Business: Following her husband's death, Ann continued to run the bakery at 5/7 Exeter Street (later known as 41 Bretonside) with her sons, James and Edwin.
The Transition (1912): Upon Ann's death in 1901, the business passed to her son, Edwin Elliott Farley, who later sold the secret formula and business to William Bolitho Trahair in 1912 before emigrating.
Expansion & Legacy: The company rebranded as Farley’s Infant Food Limited in 1919 and built a large, modern factory on Torr Lane, Peverell, in 1931. The factory was a major local employer before its closure in 1990.
