Growing up Brown & Muslim in Northern Ireland with Azeem Lateef

I am excited to release the episode of ‘How They See Us’ with Azeem Lateef aka @icarusprince. In this episode, we dive into talking about how difficult it can be growing up as a Brown person in Northern Ireland and how Azeem has struggled with having a sense of belonging here.

Azeem comes from a Pakistani and Muslim background. He shares with us his experience of growing up in NI, and what that was like for him, navigating these different identities.

We get to hear how he navigates how people see him, and how he works hard to not conform to what society expects from him. He works hard to create his own space and belonging within himself and expresses himself through his music & art.

It is empowering to hear these types of stories because they can inspire us to think about how we see ourselves in the world.

My intention for this project was to create a space for People of Colour in Northern Ireland, to share their stories freely and share how they have felt growing up here and the different struggles they face & overcome.

I am grateful for the honesty and vulnerability of their stories, and I hope everyone can take something away from these interviews.
