As the Great Depression dragged on, millions of Americans were unemployed and struggling to survive. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt launched the Works Progress Administration (WPA) to put people back to work—and restore dignity through employment. Instead of direct handouts, the WPA focused on jobs that rebuilt the nation.
The program employed over 8 million Americans, constructing roads, bridges, schools, airports, and public buildings still in use today. It also supported artists, writers, musicians, and actors—funding murals, guidebooks, plays, and oral histories that preserved American culture during one of its darkest chapters.
In this 90-second episode, we explore how the WPA helped Americans endure the Great Depression and why it’s remembered as one of the most ambitious and human-centered recovery programs in U.S. history.
