The GTA 40 is STIHL’s first professional battery-operated pruner which is certified for aerial work, as well as use on the ground.

Powered by 2 of the STIHL’S AS 2 batteries, it’s ideal for a wide range of trades. This includes trained arborists removing dead wood, or carrying out a crown lift or crown reduction, and for landscapers for use in green spaces, removal of low branches, and trimming back overgrown hedges and shrubs.

The 2 STIHL AS 2 batteries combine to make 21.6 volts and power a 520 W EC motor, meaning it has 90% more cutting capability than the well-known STIHL GTA 26 cordless pruner and is capable of double the cuts. You can get more than 190 cuts in 5 cm diameter soft wood but it’s best suited to cuts of 4 to 10 cm diameter timber.

Balance and ergonomics are important with a tool like the GTA 40 battery-powered pruner. The two lightweight batteries mean this is extremely well balanced and easy to manoeuvre between branches, with no bulky or heavy battery impeding you. The STIHL GTA 40 weighs just 2kg with the batteries, so really excels as a lighter alternative to a smaller top-handle chainsaw.

For the best cutting performance, STIHL’s patented ¼” Picco micro saw chain that is also used on our top handle arborist chainsaws, accelerates up to 8 m/s and provides a super-efficient and narrow cut in the wood, with good control. The 6-inch Light 01 guide bar has a roller bearing in the sprocket nose for long life and efficiency too.

It doesn’t have a guard over the bar either, so is suitable for plunge cuts, undercuts and overcuts. This means you will limit damage to the tree from ripping the bark if you were just cutting from the top.

There’s a charge status indicator, which shows the charge via 4 LEDs. These light up for 2 seconds after the button is pressed. If both batteries are in the tool, the charge status of the battery with the least charge is indicated. To check the charge status of an individual battery, put it in the upper battery compartment. We recommend batteries be used in equally charged pairs.

The STIHL AL 5-2 fast charger can charge 2 AS batteries to 80% in 50 minutes, and 100% in 80 minutes. The slower charge for the last 20% preserves the battery’s overall working life.

There’s a variable trigger thanks to the EC motor, so you have full control of your cuts too.
This cordless pruner also features an oil reservoir which can be used with all STIHL chainsaw oils, for automatic lubrication and cooling of the cutting attachment. The size of the tank is designed to last longer than 6 battery charges. The batteries and the tool are IPX4 rated – which protects against water splashing from all directions, so it’s perfectly fine working in the rain.

The STIHL GTA 40 has a handle with an isolated trigger, so you can attach it easily to a carabiner, plus mounting points for a loop on either side, depending on where you’d like to mount it. The scabbard also has an attachment point so it can be held on your harness. On the top, there’s a grip point with soft rubber where you should place your second hand for best working practice and guidance through the cut. There’s also a handy holster available which fits our X-FLEX harness too; perfect if you want to have your hands free for work and then get the GTA 40 cordless pruner out for certain tasks.

Chain tensioning is a simple and familiar system if you’ve used a STIHL chainsaw before; it’s just a simple screw to tension the chain, and a 13mm captive nut on the sprocket cover to stop you from losing it during maintenance. You can use the same 13 mm combination socket tool as you use for your top handle chainsaws too.

When it comes to the carry case, it’s been well thought out and designed. It can fit the STIHL GTA 40, AL 5-2 fast charger, 6 batteries, plus the combi tool and carry ring in the designated slots.
