San Antonio’s Game 5 response has to be about emotional reset, defensive discipline on Brunson, and re-centering the offense around Wembanyama’s mismatches without melting down late again.

Below is a ~4,000‑character scriptable pregame analysis you can read on stream or trim for YouTube.

Framing the series
We come into Game 5 with the Spurs down 3–1 after one of the most catastrophic collapses in NBA Finals history. San Antonio led by as many as 29 in Game 4, scored 81 points on their first 53 possessions, and still walked out of Madison Square Garden with a 107–106 loss on OG Anunoby’s tip‑in with just over a second left. New York now has three cracks at their first title since 1973, but the Spurs still have two of the last three at home starting tonight at Frost Bank Center.

What went wrong in Game 4
For a game and a half, it looked like San Antonio had solved the Knicks’ defense. They opened Game 4 going 11‑for‑16 from three, putting up a ridiculous 57 points on 29 trips — almost two points per possession — by flattening New York in pick‑and‑roll and spraying to shooters. Then everything flipped. From the middle of the third through the final buzzer, the Spurs scored just 25 points on 40 possessions, shot 6‑for‑35 overall, and coughed up eight turnovers. The inflection point was Victor Wembanyama’s flagrant foul with 9:27 left in the third; the ensuing 13–0 Knicks run cut the lead from 29 to 16 and cracked San Antonio’s poise.

Offensively, the ball stuck, the late-clock heaves piled up, and De’Aaron Fox never found a rhythm after a rough shooting night that Spurs coach Mitch Johnson openly acknowledged postgame while still backing his point guard heading into Game 5. Defensively, they never put out the Brunson–Anunoby fire: Brunson finished with 36 points and 7 assists, Anunoby had 33 and the game‑winner, and New York relentlessly hunted weak links in San Antonio’s perimeter coverage.

Keys for the Spurs in Game 5
Psychological reset at home. You don’t erase the biggest blown lead in Finals history with tactics alone; you need emotional stability. The early minutes tonight are all about composure — no rushed hero shots to “prove” Game 4 was a fluke.

Re‑center the offense around Wembanyama. Even in the loss, Wemby led San Antonio with 24 points, but needed 25 shots and faded as the game tightened. In Game 5, they have to establish him deep early against smaller Knicks lineups, then flow into kick‑outs once the double‑teams come instead of drifting to bailout stepback threes.

Fox’s decision-making. Johnson has publicly emphasized his belief in Fox after that rough outing, and this is the matchup where Fox has to punish New York’s point‑of‑attack defenders before the help loads to Wembanyama. If he gets two feet in the paint consistently, San Antonio’s offense normalizes.

Discipline on Brunson. The Knicks’ engine is Brunson’s blend of patience and physicality — he’s averaging big numbers in this series and just dropped 36 in Game 4. San Antonio must vary coverages: show him length with Wembanyama and Castle in the gaps, mix in occasional traps to get the ball out of his hands, but avoid the reckless reaching that fueled New York’s free throws and momentum during the comeback.

Closing lineups and tempo. Once again, crunch time will be about who can create clean looks when the game slows. In Game 4, New York executed; San Antonio settled. Expect the Spurs to lean into a smaller, switch-heavier closing group around Wembanyama to limit Brunson–Anunoby actions and try to run opportunistically off misses before the Knicks’ halfcourt defense gets set.

Big-picture stakes
From a numbers perspective, the Spurs are actually slight favorites in the building — most projections give them somewhere between a mid‑50s and high‑60s win probability at home, and Vegas has them by about 5–6 points. But the psychology is brutal: they’re playing not just the Knicks, but the ghost of Game 4. If San Antonio channels that humiliation into urgency and executes their defensive game plan on Brunson while restoring order offensively through Wembanyama and Fox, this series can absolutely get on a plane back to New York for Game 6.
