Behind the brightest city on Earth, the largest landfill on Earth is growing — 25 miles from the Strip. 2,200 acres. 9,000 tons of garbage daily. 50 million tons buried and counting. Capacity for 250 more years. Nevada produces twice the waste per capita of any state because 40 million tourists eat, drink, and discard — and none of it stays in Vegas. In 1998, a thunderstorm ripped open an old unlined dump and sent 100,000 cubic yards of buried waste flowing toward Lake Mead — the drinking water for 25 million people. The engineers say Apex will hold. The engineers at Sunrise said that too. This isn't excess. It's a bet against physics. And the desert forgets nothing.
