Many women say after menopause, “It’s all still working… but I put it on Do Not Disturb.”
And that’s a helpful way to think about it: libido often doesn’t “break” — it gets dialed down by a mix of hormones, sleep, stress, pain, medications, mood, and relationship load, all hitting the same control panel.
The FDA just expanded approval of Addyi (flibanserin) so it can be prescribed for postmenopausal women (up to age 65) with hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD)—meaning low desire that causes distress, after other factors are considered. Addyi is a once-daily pill taken at bedtime, and it works on brain neurotransmitters (it’s not a blood-flow “Viagra-style” drug)
And the serious part Addyi carries a boxed warning about alcohol, because taking it too close to drinking can cause dangerously low blood pressure and fainting. Common side effects include dizziness, nausea, and sleepiness, which is one reason bedtime dosing matters.
What do you think. Will this be a blockbuster or will women just not care or even not have the need to use this?
