NATIONAL PARK GRAND CIRCLE TOUR - EPISODE 3 - CAPITOL REEF
Located in south-central Utah in the heart of red rock country, Capitol Reef National Park is a hidden treasure filled with cliffs, canyons, domes, and bridges in the Waterpocket Fold, a geologic monocline (a wrinkle on the earth) extending almost 100 miles.
HIKING CALF CREEK FALLS LOWER (on the way to Capitol Reef)
Named for its use as a natural pen for calves back in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, the creek remained relatively unknown as a tourist destination until the formation of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, under the Clinton administration. Walking between mineral-streaked cliffs of Navajo Sandstone, hikers pass beaver ponds and pre-historic rock art sites en route to the paradisiacal pools. The trailhead is located at the Calf Creek Campground on Highway 12, 11 miles south of the town of Boulder, and 15 miles east of the town of Escalante. The highway follows the route of the creek for most of the distance, atop the bluff to the east of the canyon.
The lower falls are 130 feet high, with a deep swimming hole underneath them. The entire creek is surrounded by greenery, but particularly underneath the spray of the waterfall. The lower falls are the most famous out of the two waterfalls on Calf Creek, and attracts many visitors every year.

HIKING CAPITOL GORGE
Capitol Gorge follows the Capitol Wash through the Waterpocket Fold of Capitol Reef National Park going from the south end of the Scenic Drive on the west side of the Fold to the town of Notom on the east. Through the Fold, Capitol Gorge becomes deep and narrow, with several sections of almost slot-like proportions.
This was the principal route through the national park until Highway 24 was built in 1964. The gorge takes visitors past Petroglyph panels, a pioneer register, and the famous water tanks.
Length: 2 miles round trip

ORCHARDS
Early settlers planted the orchards as a cash crop and for subsistence. No more than ten families lived in Fruita at any one time, and the last residents moved away in 1969. Today, the orchards are preserved and protected as part of the Fruita Rural Historic Landscape listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The orchards contain approximately 3,100 trees including cherry, apricot, peach, pear, apple, plum, mulberry, almond, and walnut.
You are welcome to stroll in any unlocked orchard but fruit may not be picked until the orchard is posted as open for picking. When permitted, you may sample ripe fruit in any unlocked orchard. Orchards that are open for picking are signed as such. Fruit taken from the orchards must be paid for. A self-pay station with scales and signs listing fruit prices is located near the entrance of orchards open for fruit harvest. Bring your own bags. Ladders and hand-held fruit pickers are provided to help you reach the fruit.
