Rene Matić Celebrates the Art of ‘Rudeness’

For the queer London-based artist it has nothing to do with disrespect: ‘“Rudeness” is this celebration of in-betweenness,’ they say in this new video filmed in their studio at Studio Voltaire.

Matić’s work engages and challenges the concepts of authority, culture and identity. Often using a point-and-shoot 35mm film camera, images in series like ‘flags for countries that don’t exist but bodies that do’ seem both intimately casual and poignantly loaded with meaning and memories.

In 2021, their work was acquired by Tate at Frieze London, and is now on display at Tate Britain following its 2023 rehang. At Frieze London 2024, their work is presented by Arcadia Missa.

In this video, Matić discusses their practice and recent projects, including commissions for Deutsche Bank London headquarters and the lounge at Frieze London, @boldtendencies in south London and an exhibition at Vienna’s Kunsthalle Wien.
