Mamandur Cave Temples, Tiruvannamalai

Mamandur and Narasamangalam are famous for their 4 Rock-cut cave temples / Caves. From the inscriptions/writings observed in these rock-cut shrines, we can judge that these two villages are under the Pallavas' royal patronage in the sixth-seventh century and the Cholas in the eleventh century.

This place was situated not very far from Kanchipuram, the capital of the Pallavas. Of the four cave temples executed on this hill, two will be in the revenue village of Mamandur, and the other two will be in Narasamangalam village. On the back-side of these caves Dusi-Mamandur lake

There is also 2-3rd century Tamil Brahmi inscriptions found on the natural cave with a stone bed.

The lake named Chitramega Tadakam, also known as Dusi-Mamandur lake, is located behind the caves. And again, this lake might be built by king Mahendravarman I. The inscriptions found here are in Tamil, Telugu, and Sanskrit. From these inscriptions, it's believed that Chennappa Naicker was the origin of creating Chennapattanam.
