Fun Fact:
The Renault 8 or R8 Gordini was a high performance version of the rear engine,rear wheel drive Renault 8 or R8 from 1964 to 1970.
The "Gordini" name is from a former race car driver and engineer Amédée Gordini who developed and tuned the car at this company Gordini in which became a subsidiary under Renault. He was also nicknamed the " scosocer"
The R8 Gordini was made to compete in rallying , endurance and performance saloon racing of the mid 1960s to the early 1970s.
The car's curb weight was between 850 to 855 kg .
The car used the same 1,1 litre engine from the standard Renault 8 but was tuned to give 95 hp( 70 kW) which was twice the power of the standard car .
The car dominate the Tour de Course Rally championship winning 3 consecutive wins from 1964 to 1966.
For the 1966 model , Gordini redesigned the car by giving it a 1,3 liter engine producing about 100hp (75 kW) and fitted with dual headlights and came with white stripes, came with both front and rear coil spring suspension and also fitted with a 5 speed manual gearbox and lastly came with all four disc brakes , a first for performance saloon car at the time .
The R8 Gordini was dominant in Motorsports ,rivaling other cars like the Alpine A110 , Porsche 904 Carrera GTS , Lotus Cortina, Mini Cooper and lastly the Alfa Romeo Guilia T2.
It won the 1966 24 Hours of Spa,the South African Saloon car Championship in 1968 and 1970, the 1969 Monte Carlo Rallyand finally the 1970 Australian Rally Championship. Renault also made a one make model Championship.
Its powered with a naturally aspirated 1,1 to 1,3 liter water cooled 4 cylinder engine producing between 57 to 75 kW and 98 Nm of torque paired with a 4 to 5 speed manual gearbox. 0 to 100km/h in between 10,7 to 12,3 seconds and top speed is between 171 to 175 km/h or 106 to 108 mph.
Between 11,600 to 12,000 of them were made during its 6 year production run.
The R8 Gordini became an icon in motorsport, for its lightweight and fast for a small car , it dominated every motorsport of its day rivals cars bigger or had more power and the ingenuity of Mr Gordini himself for making a pocket rocket of a machine. It well loved by classic car enthusiasts.
