Kagawa may be Japan’s smallest prefecture — but it delivers some of the biggest surprises 🇯🇵
In this episode of our “47 Prefectures of Japan” series, we explore the land of world-class gardens, legendary islands, and the undisputed capital of udon noodles.
From a Michelin three-star garden to romantic sand roads that appear only at low tide, Kagawa proves that small can be extraordinary.
🌳 Ritsurin Garden
Awarded three stars in the Michelin Green Guide, Ritsurin Garden is one of Japan’s finest strolling gardens.
Built over 100 years during the Edo period, it features 1,400 pine trees, six ponds, borrowed scenery from Mt. Shiun, and breathtaking seasonal beauty.
Its size? 75 hectares — even larger than many of Japan’s most famous gardens.
🍜 Sanuki Udon – Japan’s Udon Capital
Kagawa is home to over 600 udon restaurants.
Discover why Sanuki udon is famous for its firm texture, the unique self-service style, and the culture of “udon tours.”
Slurping is not rude here — it’s part of the experience.
🏝 Megijima (Onigashima)
Linked to the Momotaro legend, this island features mysterious caves said to be home to demons — and modern art installations from the Setouchi Triennale.
🌊 Angel Road
A romantic sandbar that appears only at low tide, connecting small islands together. Legend says couples who cross it hand in hand will have their wish granted.
⛩ Tsushima Shrine
A shrine accessible only two days a year, when a temporary bridge connects it to the mainland — a rare and fascinating Japanese tradition.
✨ Other highlights include:
• Shodoshima (olive island of Japan)
• Kotohira Shrine
• Marugame Castle
• Art islands of the Seto Inland Sea
• Local specialties like bone-in chicken, olive-fed hamachi, wasanbon sweets, and sake
Kagawa shows a different side of Japan:
slower, more traditional, deeply cultural — and delicious.
