The ecological approach “emphasizes the study of interaction
between the person and the environment during
everyday, functional tasks and the close linkage between
perception and action (i.e., purposeful movement).”
Gibson described the role of functional goals and the
environment in the relationship between perception and
action. He stated that direct perception involves the active
search for affordances or the functional use of objects
for a person with unique personal characteristics. Therefore,
Gibson’s concept of affordances recognizes the close
linkage between perception and action in terms of what
the information available in the environment means to a
specific person.
