HAPA began with an idea: Creating a haven where Hmong children in Milwaukee are known, challenged, taught about their heritage and prepared to lead. In this short video, you’ll hear from our founder and CEO, Dr. Chris Her-Xiong, whose own refugee journey inspired a school grounded in culture, belonging and academic rigor.
You'll meet John Thao, a recent HAPA graduate whose path reflects what’s possible when scholars are seen and supported. Kia Vue, is another HAPA alum who felt called to come back and teach. Finally, HAPA Foundation Board President Jason Handal and Board Member Sarah Zimmerman share why investing in this work matters for the city's future.
