In Bardufoss, Norway, Prime Minister Mark Carney, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz hold a news conference after observing NATO’s Cold Response military exercise. The prime minister reiterates the announcement he made yesterday on Arctic security which includes an investment of approximately $35 billion to enhance Canada’s military presence in the North.
Carney faces questions from reporters on the Trump administration’s decision to temporarily lift sanctions on Russian oil for 30 days in an effort to stabilize global energy prices. He is also asked about new Statistics Canada figures that shows that the economy lost 84,000 jobs in February and the unemployment rate increased to 6.7 per cent.
