This past Christmas I went home to Wisconsin to visit family, and I got a reminder of not only what the essence of Zen practice is, but...dare I say it? I dare!!... I got an insight into a Truth about the human condition!
It's simple. The Zen poet Ikkyu said it best. Someone asked him what the truth was, and he said I'll give you a 3-part answer: "Attention, attention, attention."
And there you have it. If you pay attention to what's going on on the inside, you can see through your own suffering. And if you pay attention to what's going on on the outside -- to, say, a relative -- you can see through the ideas and oversimplifications you're projecting onto that person.
Attention is how you dissolve the ego and connect. The intense family setting this past Christmas helped me to rediscover what Zen practice in action looks like, and I unpack that (harrowing!) process in this video.
