I was out doing some work when I came across this house that honestly didn’t look like anyone had been paying attention to it for a long time, the grass was tall, the sidewalks were completely covered, and from the street it just had that abandoned feel to it. So I walked up and knocked on the door to see if anyone was home, and right away I noticed the front door was actually wide open on the inside with just the screen door closed. At that point I didn’t feel right just assuming anything, so I noticed the neighbor next door was outside and went over to talk with him to see if he knew what was going on. From what he told me, the house has been vacant for a while now, and the owner only showed up once a couple months back to trim a tree and cut the grass, but since then it hasn’t been cut and it’s just keeps getting worse. So I figured the least I could do was focus on the things that were affecting everyone else around here, like getting the sidewalks cleared off, the curb line cleaned up, the driveway edged out, and knocking down all the tall grass so people could actually walk through here again. Once the sidewalks were opened back up, you could really see how big of a difference it made, not just for the house but for the whole street. While I was wrapping things up, the local mailman actually stopped to talk to me and thanked me for what I was doing because he walks this route every day, and overgrown yards like this make his job a lot harder than most people realize. That moment alone made the whole cleanup worth it, because this one wasn’t about a perfect lawn, it was about helping the neighborhood breathe a little easier again.
