I follow the polished hospital hallway that leads to one of the most restrictive places a woman can be held in the federal prison system.

I examine daily life inside the Administrative Unit at Federal Medical Center, Carswell: sleeping on a mattress that can be removed, eating beside the toilet, showering under supervision, living with constant noise, and receiving only limited time outside the cell.

I also trace the unit’s history, the women held there, allegations of abuse, the death of Linda Fenton, and the outside oversight that has faded away. In the end, this is a story about how a hospital became a prison built around one door.
