Starting a new series: Lessons on Language, Culture & Raising Bilingual Kids
✨From growing up Asian American to raising Asian American kids✨
This journey has been beautiful, funny, and sometimes a little messy. I'm sharing the real things I’ve learned so far as we try to raise bilingual kids in a bilingual-ish home.
Lesson 1: Boundaries, Pride, and Purpose — these are the three pillars that help keep us grounded as a bilingual family.
💬 Boundaries mean setting expectations for when and where we use Mandarin. For us, it’s mostly at home and we try to stay consistent, even when it’s tempting to switch to English.
🌟 Pride is helping my kids feel good about being bilingual. I want them to be proud of speaking another language, not shy or pressured.
🎯 Purpose is what keeps us going. I have my reasons for teaching them Mandarin, but they need to find their own — whether it's talking to family, understanding a holiday, or just loving a favorite phrase.
We’re figuring it out as we go, but being intentional has made all the difference.
