I recently took a trip up into the foothills of Hsinchu County to hike the stunning Syakaro Ancient Trail.
This picturesque 22km-long trail winds its way through luscious valleys and over the hair-raising heights of the Baishi Suspension Bridge, passing by the ruins of Japanese-era police stations along the way.
Accessible all year round, the best time of the year to visit is autumn when the maple trees change colour putting on spectacular displays of red, yellow and orange foliage.

Transport:
The trailheads for the Syakaro Trail are way up in the mountains of Hsinchu County and therefore there is no public transport.
The road to the Skaru trailhead (石鹿登山口) is in very poor condition so the best way to get there is via a chartered shuttle.
Another way is to reserve a spot with a transport service such as Parkbus, which organizes regular shuttles to trails in Taiwan.
The other, and most popular way is to drive to the Yanglao trailhead (養老登山口) and do the trail as an in-and-out walk.
