The OAH’s International Committee presents its first virtual roundtable, aimed at exploring international perspectives on United States history. This one-hour discussion among scholars Yu “Toku” Tokunaga (Kyoto University, Japan), Irina Córdoba Ramírez (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México), and Nicolás Camino (Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile), moderated by Maddalena Marinari (Gustavus College, USA) will explore how U.S. immigration history is taught and researched outside the United States.
These scholars will offer their perspectives drawn from research topics including comparative Asian American and Latin American immigration, legal and illegal immigration, and Gold Rush-era immigration to California. They will explore a common set of questions, including topics such as: How does U.S. immigration history look when examined from a vantage point outside the United States? How is it contextualized in relation to other histories of migration? What perspectives might these scholars’ research and teaching bring to bear on debates around current U.S. immigration policy and practice?
We encourage those teaching U.S. immigration history who would like to make use of this recording in their classes to do so.
