Welcome to what I consider one of the best urban and nature hikes in tasmania. Cataract Gorge is just on the edge of the city of Launceston and has a wonderful mix of sealed paths, bridges and bush walks. On this hike I walk a number of different trails which include the Zig Zag Track, Cataract walk, First Basin and Duck Reach Trail to finish at the old power station upstream.
The animal at 2:10 is a young Pademelon which is a small marsupial found only in Australia and New Guinea!
This is my first hike using my new Osmo Pocket 2 so please excuse the lower quality audio and bobbing up and down. I've bought this camera so I can comfortably bring you much longer hikes. My previous rig, whilst producing better quality images, was very heavy and so I could only do a maximum of 1 hour hiking with it. This new camera set up will allow me to go on hike over 2 hours and even longer!

A bit of info about the trail from tasmania dot com:
The walk starts in King’s Park, the water frontage between the Tamar River and the Penny Royal Watermill complex on Bridge Road. With the water on your right, walk along the foreshore path, under the West Tamar Highway Road Bridge, and climb up to Bridge Road. Turn right and walk across the steel structure bridge, Kings Bridge. For nearly 100 years this was the only bridge allowing access to the West Bank of the Tamar River from Launceston. North Side of the Gorge: Immediately over the bridge, the path runs left and along the Gorge. The water of the South Esk River will be on your left. Follow the path as it winds its way into the Gorge. Watch for the path turnoff to the right that takes you uphill to a lookout for scenic views up the Gorge if so inclined. First Basin: Continue along the path to the First Basin. This open area has some excellent gardens, the Gorge Restaurant and easy walking paths. Duck Reach: The Interpretation Centre built into the decommissioned Duck Reach Power Station is well worth a visit, and the Restaurants, cafes and facilities of the Basin are worth looking around. Walking Trails: Cataract Gorge Tasmania, AustraliaThere are a number of well marked paths that will take you further into the Reserve on isolated bush trails, and these make for excellent walking.
Chairlift: After spending time in the First Basin, ride the Chairlift if so inclined. It is said to be the longest single span chairlift in the Southern Hemisphere. Suspension Bridge: Suspension bridge - Cataract Gorge Reserve, First Basin and Cliff Grounds, Tasmania, AustraliaCross the South Esk by way of the Suspension Bridge (circa. 1940) at the western end of the First basin. Back to Kings Park: You will see the Car Park up and on your right as you head downstream from the first Basin.
A bit about Cataract Gorge from Discover Tasmania's website:
The Cataract Gorge Reserve on the South Esk River is a unique natural formation just minutes from central Launceston. The Gorge has walking tracks, swimming pool, the world's longest single-span chairlift, a restaurant, cafe, a suspension bridge and panoramic lookouts with spectacular views. Peacocks and native wildlife add to the experience. On the southern side of the river is First Basin, featuring a swimming pool and an open area surrounded by bushland.
