Making Charcoal the Low-Tech Way

One of my neighbors is making charcoal by burying a fire which burns slowly for days. This is a simple way to make biochar or cooking coals. Next time I hope to see how he built it from the beginning, but I have the basic idea. First you gather hardwood and stack it together, then cover that with brush, grass and earth, then bury it all except for one end where you start the fire. Once that is going, leave a good vent or two on one side and cover the rest of it up... then let it burn for days. Though I recorded this video at the end of last week after the fire have been going for a few days... it's still burning now on Monday!
