Iranian attacks on energy infrastructure in the Gulf have damaged facilities in Qatar that account for about 17 % of the country’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) export capacity, according to QatarEnergy officials. The strikes, which hit key plants at the Ras Laffan complex, could sideline around 12.8 million tonnes of LNG annual exports and significantly disrupt global gas flows. Repairs are expected to take three to five years, prolonging the impact on energy markets.
The loss of output has major geopolitical and economic implications, from forcing Qatar to declare force majeure on long-term contracts with buyers in Europe and Asia to tightening global LNG supply amid already elevated energy prices. Analysts warn this could ripple through global energy markets, increasing competition for LNG cargoes while raising concerns about long-term energy security in a turbulent Middle East.
