US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the probe will examine whether these economies maintain structural excess manufacturing capacity and persistent trade surpluses that harm American industries. If violations are confirmed, Washington could impose new tariffs as early as this summer.

The move comes after the US Supreme Court struck down Trump’s earlier global tariff regime last month. The administration is now seeking new legal pathways to rebuild tariff pressure on trading partners while also launching a separate investigation into goods produced using forced labour.
