Initially, le Herisse, the name came to England with the Norman Conquest, and is of Old French derivation.

The Harris Baronetcy of Boreatton in the County of Shropshire was created in the Baronetage of England in 1622 for Sir Thomas Harris, an English Lawyer. The title became extinct on the death of the seventh Baronet in 1693.
The Harris Baronetcy of Stowford near Launceston in the County of Devon was created in the Baronetage of England in 1673 for Arthur Harris, Member of Parliament for Okehampton. The title became extinct on his death in 1686.
George Harris (1746-1829) was a British soldier who served in America and India and was elevated to the peerage of the United Kingdom as Baron Harris in 1815.
