A heritage museum was inaugurated for public use in the British-era old district collectorate complex in Thanjavur city on Saturday. Under the joint efforts of the district administration and Thanjavur corporation, the architecturally unique old collector office building was renovated at 9.4 crore using the smart cities mission programme fund and district administration’s fund, to accommodate the museum.
The old collector office located on Court Road was chosen for the redevelopment project after the collectorate was relocated to a new spacious complex on Trichy Road near Tamil University. Since Thanjavur considered the rice bowl of the state was the capital city of the erstwhile Chola kingdom, water management practices and traditional irrigation methods implemented by Chola kings were displayed as exhibits.

Separate halls to display stone sculptures and metal sculptures were established in the museum. A 7D movie hall to educate the visitors and products that were given GI tags were displayed. Officials said that two acres of space adjacent to the old collectorate were cleared and converted into a bird park. Macaw and parrots have been accommodated in the park.
After the existing new Collectorate building was opened in 2015 near Tamil University, the 120-year-old British-era collectorate building constructed in Indo-Saracenic architecture near Thanjavur combined court building was transformed into a museum. The building served as the headquarters of the erstwhile combined Thanjavur district.

10 commodities belonging to Thanjavur that obtained GI tag were also displayed at the museum. The agriculture department displayed the conventional types of farm equipment, granite, metal idols, traditional weaving equipment, Thanjavur art plates and rocking dolls.
