Fort Smith National Cemetery was once a small cemetery and it has expanded several times in it's year history. It now has over 17,000 graves in approximately 32 acres. One of it's most famous interments is that of Isaac Parker who was nicknamed as the "Hanging Judge." Parker was born in 1838 in Ohio and died 1896. He was corporal during the Civil War, practiced law after the Civil War, became a judge for the 12th Circuit of Missouri and was elected to Congress twice. In 1875, President Grant appointed him U.S. District Judge for the Eastern District of Arkansas. He did his job well and made the lawlessness of the Indian Territory into something that was possible for settlement.
