On April 28, 2005, the U.S. Department of Interior proclaimed that the magnificent Ivory-billed Woodpecker was NOT extinct…that it still existed in the Big Woods region of Arkansas. The “primary evidence” for this exciting, unambiguous declaration was David Luneau’s April 25, 2004 video of an Ivorybill.
We are honored and delighted to present this fascinating discussion with David about his earth-shaking video.
David is an associate professor in electronics and computer engineering technology at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He has a master’s in electrical engineering from Georgia Tech University and a bachelor’s in electrical engineering from Rice University.
He co-wrote the famous Science paper in 2005, “Ivory-billed Woodpecker (Campephilus principalis) Persists in Continental North America,” with Fitzpatrick, Lammertink, Gallagher, et al.

Additional note:
In the video, we referenced that the USFWS website had removed their link for the April 28, 2005 press release announcing the rediscovery of the Ivorybill in Arkansas. While this is still true, the Dept. of Interior has it available in their archives:
