Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk (1536/8–1572), was an English nobleman who held the premier peerage in the realm during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. He was the son of Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey, who was executed in 1547. Following the restoration of his grandfather, the 3rd Duke, in 1553, Thomas succeeded to the dukedom and the hereditary office of Earl Marshal upon his grandfather's death in 1554.
Initially serving as a Privy Councillor and military commander for Queen Elizabeth I, he even supervised her coronation in 1559. However, despite being raised with Protestant influences, Norfolk retained strong Catholic sympathies and became embroiled in dangerous political intrigues revolving around Mary, Queen of Scots, Elizabeth's Catholic cousin and rival claimant to the English throne.
He entertained the idea of marrying Mary, a plot suggested by Scottish and English nobles as a solution to the succession difficulties, which led to his brief imprisonment in 1569. Upon his release, he foolishly allowed himself to be drawn into the more serious Ridolfi Plot of 1571. This conspiracy aimed to depose Elizabeth with the aid of a Spanish invasion, place Mary on the throne, and have her marry Norfolk.
The plot was discovered, and Thomas Howard was arrested, tried for high treason, and convicted by a jury of his peers. He was the first English noble executed under Elizabeth I, meeting his end on Tower Hill on June 2, 1572. His involvement with Mary Stuart and the subsequent treasonous plots ultimately cost him his life and saw his titles and estates forfeit, though they were later partially restored to his descendants.
