Pelion the land of the centaurs - Mountain, wonderful beaches and Greek traditions |
Pelion is a mountain in the southeastern part of Thessaly in central Greece, forming a hook-shaped peninsula between the Pagasetic Gulf and the Aegean Sea. The highest peak, Pourianos Stavros, has an altitude of 1624 meters.
Pelion is the well-known Greek peninsula located between Athens and Thessaloniki, near the city of Volos, being the perfect combination of mountain and sea - a perfect destination for a stay in Greece with the family.
Beaches in Pelion
Agios Ioannis is a sandy beach located in the east of Pelion, near the village of Kissos, which offers an enchanting landscape, a perfect combination between the green of the forest and the crystal clear water of the sea.
Mylopotamos is a beach with sand and white pebbles, with crystalline water of a rare beauty. Mylopotamos beach is divided in two by a rocky formation, being quite crowded during the summer.
Horefto beach is the most beautiful and popular beach in Pelion, with fine sand, calm, clean and clear waters, with a length of approximately 2 km. Near Horefto beach you can find accommodation, restaurants, cafes, bars, patisseries and mini-markets.
Agios Saranta beach is located south of Horefto, a 15-minute walk away.
Plaka Pelion beach is a small beach in the east of the Pelion peninsula, north of Horefto, crowded during the summer, tourists looking here for peace and clear waters for swimming.
Papa Nero beach is a beach with white sand and turquoise waters, located in the continuation of Agios Ioannis beach. Here you can find taverns that serve you delicious seafood and fresh fish dishes, so you can enjoy your meal on the beach and admire the beauty of the Aegean Sea.
Damouchari beach is a pebble beach, but nearby you can find taverns, restaurants and bars.
Parisaina Beach is a virgin land with lush vegetation that actually invades the beach creating an enchanting exotic landscape.
Food:
In Pelion, wines, liqueurs, brandies, jams, olive oil, herbs, teas and honey are among the most appreciated in all of Greece.
The local apple is called fyriki and has small and aromatic fruits from which jams and a very fragrant sherbet are made, which is served with a glass of cold water.
If you arrive in Pelion try local traditional specialties: white bean soup, tyropsomo - a bread prepared with cheese and oregano or spetsofai - a spicy dish prepared with peppers, tomatoes and sausages.
Don't forget to look for taramosalata, a kind of roe salad prepared with potatoes.
Some of the local specialties worth trying are spetzofai, mousakas, "tsitsiravla", pies and local meat as well. The culinary feast will be completed by the traditional sweets of Pelion, usually made "at home"
