Struggling with your agapanthus flowers? It might be agapanthus gall midge, a tiny fly that lays its eggs on developing flower buds. The larvae then feed inside, causing the buds to become distorted and fail to open.
You're not alone – Sue Kent has been tackling it too.
Here's what to look for:
💙 Deformed buds: Check for oddly shaped flower buds with brown patches.
💙 Failed blooms: Buds may fail to open and instead dry up or rot.
💙 Collapsed flower heads: The entire flower head might collapse if the infestation occurs early.
Here's how to manage it:
Monitor: Regularly check your plants for symptoms as soon as buds start to develop.
Destroy: Remove and destroy any affected flower heads immediately to prevent the spread. For severely infested plants, it's best to destroy the entire plant. Don't put them in the compost; you can dispose of them in a municipal green waste bin, where the very high composting temperatures eliminate all the bugs.
Repot: If your agapanthus is in a container, repot it and replace the soil.
