Hi Everyone, my name is Alexander Davis, and I am the founder and artistic director of Sugar Hill Salon Chamber Music, based here in Harlem on the traditional territory of the Lenapehoking.
We are thrilled to announce that our sixth season is underway, and right now, you have the rare opportunity to double your impact by donating during Black History Month. This month, we received a generous $10,000-dollar match offer from one of our most valued donors, so if you donate now, you can help us raise $20,000 in total. Giving our chamber music series security for an additional two to three years! To let you know how your donation has already directly impacted our collective, I’d love to share some successes from this past season
Due to your financial backing, Sugar Hill Salon has officially joined Midori & Friends’ ensemble roster for their new Celebrate Music! outreach program offering K-12 public school performances. This allows us to be of service to younger audiences, and this month, we’ll already be heading to several schools offering a Black History Month program.
We commissioned 4 works this past season by Caleb Smith, Alyssa Mercedes Mena, Jay Saint Flono, and Peri Mauer. They align with our mission of highlighting works by composers from historically silenced communities. This year, we’ll be working with Latino DJ and dancer, Bev Vega, to put together a new performative chamber work premiering in July called Above Ground Radio. Stay tuned for more
We’ve extended our concert series from 7 to 8 concerts in a year to include a Juneteenth-inspired concert. You might remember that this past season, we successfully premiered an Afro Baroque chamber work called, Praise Song for the Flying Africans by Jay Saint Flono.
We will continue that tradition this year in collaboration with the American Composers Forum through their Recomposing America series. This series is an intervention timed with the 250th anniversary of the USA's Declaration of Independence. It is the American Composers Forum’s multi-year initiative designed to illustrate and catalyze engagement with a variety of artists reflecting the complexity of American history.
We’re so excited to be a part of Recomposing America and to share this moment with composer and cellist Malachi Brown. We’ll be premiering their new septet, it’s Black, It’s US, on June 17th at the Africa Centre in Harlem. So save the date!
Last but not least, Sugar Hill Salon has supported over 60 artists since our inception, and we’re hoping you will consider donating to help us continue to be that uplifting anchor in our community! Thank you so much for believing in our mission, and we hope to see you at our next concert featuring Aliyah Danielle on French horn and voice on Monday, February 23rd at 7:00 PM.
