The National Hurricane Center director, Ken Graham says a warmer atmosphere could lead to more frequent heavy storms in a preview of the official hurricane outlook forecast to be released at the end of the month.
"I think one thing we have to realize is, we start getting a warmer atmosphere you get some of these intense rainfall events, I think we're going to see those continue and maybe become more frequent" Says Graham.
While making an appearance at the annual hurricane conference in West Palm Beach where companies show of the latest tech in disaster preparedness, Graham stressed the danger of water during storms, attributing a majority of storm fatalities are from flooding.
"When we close our eyes we generally see the wind, but we need to start seeing the water because, it's the water in tropical systems that's actually killing people and hurting us."
Graham says the Hurricane center is focusing on getting storm surge warnings out to the public 72 hours before surge impacts an area, currently weather technology gives about a 48 hours warning.
