Siege of Szigetvár 1566 | 2,300 Hungarians vs 150,000 Ottomans | The Siege That Killed a Sultan
The Siege of Szigetvár (1566) was one of the most heroic last stands in European history. Just 2,300 Hungarian and Croatian defenders, led by Nikola Šubić Zrinski, faced an overwhelming Ottoman army of nearly 150,000 soldiers commanded by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. For weeks, the defenders resisted relentless artillery bombardment and repeated assaults, knowing relief would never come. As the fortress burned and supplies vanished, Zrinski launched a final suicidal charge rather than surrender. Although the Ottomans eventually captured Szigetvár, the cost was devastating—Sultan Suleiman died during the siege, halting the Ottoman advance toward Vienna. This battle became a symbol of sacrifice, resistance, and how a small force changed the course of history.
