Moree is on the Newell highway in northern New South Wales, Australia. It is known for its rich agriculture and thermal springs. The Mehi river winds its way through the town. The town is located over the Great Artesian Basin, which combined with the Mehi river gives it lots of natural water supply.
The town has some beautiful historical architecture, including some stunning Art Deco buildings. There are some lovely street paintings throughout the town and a DC9 at one of the taverns.
European settlers arrived in the mid-1800s, with the official establishment of the town in 1862. The rich soil of the Moree Plains quickly attracted settlers who began cultivating wheat, cotton, and other crops. In 1895, the discovery of the artesian borehole transformed Moree into a popular health destination, with people travelling from afar to bathe in its mineral-rich waters.
Moree’s name comes from an Indigenous word from the Kamilaroi (Gamilaraay) language, meaning “rising sun,” “long waterhole,” or “water for drinking.” The Kamilaroi people are the traditional custodians of the land in and around Moree, and the area was an important meeting place for local tribes due to its natural resources and access to water.
We stayed at the Moree Showgrounds for a few days. It has everything we need, is walking distance to town, and is located beside the lovely Mehi river.
