Across Isiolo County, communities are taking the lead in addressing some of the most pressing challenges they face—from clean water access to sanitation and climate-resilient livelihoods.
In this video, we spotlight the incredible work being done by Pastoralist Women for Health and Education (PWHE), (a member of the ASAL Humanitarian Network (AHN)) through the support of Center for Disaster Philanthropy and Vitol Foundation as they implement sustainable, community-led solutions through the Survivor and Community-Led Response (SCLR) approach.
📍 Barambate – Community members now have access to clean and safe water, reducing the burden on women and girls who previously walked long distances to fetch water from unsafe sources.
📍 Mabatini – A sanitation initiative has brought dignity and improved hygiene through the construction of inclusive, gender-sensitive latrines.
📍 Rapsu and Duse – Local farmers are now using newly accessible water sources to irrigate their land, improving food security and boosting incomes in these drought-prone regions.
What makes this work truly powerful is that it is driven by the communities themselves—identifying their priorities, designing their solutions, and taking ownership of the outcomes. PWHE provides facilitation and technical support, but the vision and leadership come from the people.
🌀 This is localization in action.
🌀 This is the Sclr approach.
Through this project, supported by AHN and aligned with the broader localization agenda, we’re witnessing the ripple effects of investing in grassroots leadership—especially women-led organizations—in transforming lives and systems from the ground up.
Watch, share, and amplify the voices of Isiolo’s changemakers.
