Their peace is threatened by the sinister Captain Hook (Ernest Torrence), a vengeful pirate captain whose hand was cut off by Peter and replaced with a hook. Hook lives in constant fear of a ticking crocodile that once swallowed his hand, whose presence signals doom. Meanwhile, Tinker Bell (Virginia Brown Faire) becomes jealous of Wendy’s closeness to Peter. Misled by jealousy, she convinces one of the Lost Boys to shoot Wendy, believing her to be a bird. Wendy is gravely injured, and Tinker Bell drinks poison in an attempt to save her. The children’s belief in fairies revives Tinker Bell, reinforcing the theme of faith and imagination.

The pirates, led by Hook (Ernest Torrence), capture the children and attempt to poison Peter. However, Tinker Bell warns him, and with the aid of the Lost Boys and the island’s mermaids, Peter orchestrates a daring rescue. A climactic battle ensues, and Hook meets his final defeat when he is dragged into the crocodile’s jaws.

After their adventure, Wendy (Mary Brian), John (Jack Murphy), and Michael (Philippe De Lacy) return home to London, where Mrs. Darling (Esther Ralston) rejoices at their safe return. Peter refuses to stay, declaring his wish never to grow up. He flies back to Neverland, leaving the Darling children to grow older, but granting Wendy permission to visit once a year to help with “spring cleaning,” symbolizing the enduring connection between childhood and imagination.

Esther Ralston and Mary Brian, who play mother and daughter in this film, were only three and a half years apart in age.

The first film adaptation of the 1904 play by J. M. Barrie. He wrote a detailed script, and personally supervised the production. His script stated specifically that Captain Hook should be played "with absolute seriousness and avoidance of trying to be funny". He felt that, on stage, actors of the role had sometimes indulged in buffoonery, "with fatal results". Barrie emphasized that Hook should be interpreted as a "blood-thirsty villain", but also impress as a civilized, charming dandy.

The original Broadway production of "Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up" by J.M. Barrie opened at the Empire Theater on November 6, 1905, ran for 223 performances, closed on May 20, 1906 and starred Maude Adams, a stage actress who never made any films.

The first time that Tinkerbell was played by an actress as opposed to simply a spotlight on the stage. The intertitles are taken directly from J.M. Barrie's dialogue for the play.

Paramount spent nine months looking for an actress to star as Peter Pan. J.M. Barrie's contract for the rights gave him star approval, and Paramount was unable to find an actress whom Barrie approved until they tested then-unknown Betty Bronson.

In 2000, this was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the U.S. Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.
