Deepening bilateral relations in Asia have become common but none has deepened as much as Japan-India ties in the last decade. In 2014, when the two declared their special strategic and global partnership, this relationship deepened even further. However, this new, stronger partnership came under the spotlight with Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. While Russia has long been India’s time-tested ‘special and privileged strategic partner’, Japan has a lingering territorial dispute with Russia. Moreover, Japan and Russia never signed a peace treaty after the end of World War II in 1945. Since February 2022, Japan has been a vocal supporter of Ukraine.
The seminar will outline the significance of the Japan-India special strategic partnership and consider their contrasting views on the war in Ukraine in the context of their different historical trajectories. The event will also contemplate what the future holds for the bilateral relationship and the implications for broader regional and global politics.
