Le Tre Città, ovvero Bormla, Birgu e Isla, sono sicuramente le zone più ricche di storia, le più affascinanti e caratteristiche di tutta Malta. Proprio per questi motivi rientrano nella lista dei candidati a patrimoni dell’UNESCO.
Ognuna possiede anche dei nomi onorifici: Senglea per Isla, Cospicua per Bormla e Vittoriosa per Birgu.
Birgu è da considerarsi una delle zone più monumentali di Malta, al pari della vicina Valletta, e ruota intorno alla fortezza di Sant’Angelo. Passeggiare per le sue strade, tra la Marina e lungo le sue mura, è un’esperienza che non può lasciare indifferenti, soprattutto dopo aver compreso il suo fondamentale ruolo storico, sia nel Grande Assedio Ottomano del 1565, che durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Forte Sant’Angelo è un grande bastione fortificato considerato il fiore all’occhiello del regno dell’Ordine di San Giovanni.

The Three Cities, or Bormla, Birgu and Isla, are certainly the richest areas in history, the most fascinating and characteristic in all of Malta. It is precisely for these reasons that they are included in the list of candidates for UNESCO heritage.
The Three Cities are called in Maltese Isla, Bormla and Birgu. Each also has honorary names: Senglea for Isla, Cospicua for Bormla and Vittoriosa for Birgu.
Birgu is to be considered one of the most monumental areas of Malta, like nearby Valletta, and revolves around the fortress of Sant’Angelo. Walking through its streets, between the Marina and along its walls, is an experience that cannot leave you indifferent, especially after having understood its fundamental historical role, both in the Great Ottoman Siege of 1565, and during the Second World War. Forte Sant'Angelo is a large fortified bastion considered the flagship of the reign of the Order of St. John.
