Wisconsin has over 15,000 lakes, and spending summer days on the water is a well-honored tradition. One form of outdoor recreation though, wake boating, is a source of contention in the state.
These boats are specifically designed to create large waves, with ballasts, which are like tanks, that fill up with water, a propeller pointed downwards and a hull shape that displaces more water.
These features cause some to have concerns, and in 2022, the University of Minnesota completed a study that found that to mitigate the force of the waves created by wake boats, the watercraft should be roughly 500 feet or more from the shore and other boaters.
According to the study, this is the distance it takes for waves to become similar to the ones created by other common recreation boats.
