Western Cape Premier Winde Alan Winde has welcomed the announcement by President Cyril Ramaphosa to deploy the South Africa National Defence Force (SANDF) to gang-ridden areas in the province to assist the police in clamping down on rampant gun violence.
Ramaphosa made the announcement during his State of the Nation address (SONA), emphasising that police and the SANDF must rapidly develop a technical plan to address gang violence.
Winde says the deployment is a short-term reprieve and more must be done to bolster policing capacity.
