A large number of oil tankers have recently been heading toward the west coast of Saudi Arabia to load crude oil directly from ports on the Red Sea, avoiding the need to pass through the sensitive Strait of Hormuz. Saudi Arabia can do this because it has a maior
cross-country pipeline system, often called the East-West pipeline, which transports crude from oil fields in the east to export terminals such as Yanbu Port. This allows tankers ta load oil on the Red Sea side and sail toward Europe, Africa, or the Americas without entering the Gulf. The system is considered a key strategic advantage, giving Saudi Arabia flexibility to keep exports flowing even if shipping routes in the Persian Gulf face disruptions.
