Before we swing our swords on the big day (September 6, 1442), let’s rewind the VHS a bit to set the scene. Our Hunyadi—Voivode of Transylvania, professional Turk-smasher, and part-time chaos manager—had already been on a bit of a rollercoaster that year.
First stop: Marosszentimre, where things... didn't go so great. The Hungarian army, led by Hunyadi and his tag-team partner Miklós Újlaki, took a nasty loss. You know it’s bad when even the chroniclers start skipping over the details like, “Anyway, moving on...”
But plot twist! They bounced back fast, just a few days later, landing a huge win at the Battle of Szebeni in March. They obliterated the Ottoman forces under Mezid Bey, who had shown up with a much larger army, probably thinking it’d be an easy stomp-fest.
Did the Ottomans just go home and chill after that? Of course not—this is 15th-century Eastern Europe. Everybody’s got a grudge, and nobody knows how to quit.
To make things worse (or better, depending on which side of the Danube you’re sitting on), both the Wallachian and Moldavian voivodes flipped sides or threw up their hands in surrender, basically saying, “Yeah, we’re with Hungary now.”
