Ana Leira Carnero's CARNAVALITO XXI is a powerful and captivating award-winning piece. Its conception combines contemporary academic music with folk music from the Altiplano-Puna region (northern Argentina), more specifically, with the traditional indigenous dance called carnavalito, whose rhythm is mostly lively and obstinate. The work is also influenced by rock music. Exotic melodies employing several modes, such as Dorian, Phrygian and Aeolian, or using the pentatonic scale, alternate with moments of intense chromaticism. Extended techniques are included, like chopping and tango effects. Some violin patterns effectively imitate folk instruments: quena, charango and bombo legüero. Both violin parts require the virtuoso technique of skilled musicians, due to the great difficulty of the piece.
