This is the new iPhone SE. With a familiar design, it packs some serious upgrades on the inside, namely the A15 bionic chip from the Apple’s flagship iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro. This makes the iPhone SE is a good place to start if you are new to the iPhone, or if you want a phone that doesn’t break the bank and that still provides that Apple experience, in terms of speed, reliably and longevity. The iPhone SE starts at $429 dollars or £419. Comes in three colours, including my favourite, Midnight. 64gb,128gb and 256gb capacities. The iPhone SE features the same design as the iPhone 8. Coming from the iPhone 13 this was quite an adjustment in terms of size. The use of high quality build materials, glass front and back as well as the aluminium frame all look good but also feel repetitive. The 4.7” Retina HD display is good. Colours are accurate, 326 ppi means even finer text is readable and it gets bright enough to use outdoors. However because it is not an OLED display, colours won’t look at good as on the display of the iPhone 13 or even some Android phones in it’s price. The iPhone SE is rated IP67, water resistant up to 1 meter for up to 30 minutes. The thin design with rounded corners feels comfortable in the hand and the home-button does have one big advantage, Touch ID. Touch ID remains to be a fast and reliable way to unlock, use Apple Pay and login to Apps. Let’s talk performance, this is where the iPhone SE shines and sets itself apart from the competition in it’s price range. The iPhone SE features Apple’s A15 Bionic chip from the flagship iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro. The A15 Bionic chip is the fastest phone chip out now. Day to day performance is buttery smooth, the phone never lags and performs great even during more intense tasks like gaming and photo editing, just like the more expensive iPhone 13 and 13 Pro. The A15 bionic chip does not just mean the SE will perform well today but also in the next 4, 5 even 6 years. This is something you will not find in any other phone at this price. To add to the longevity, the iPhone SE now also supports 5G. Battery life on the iPhone SE is manageable but also not one it’s strengths. It is easy to kill during more graphic intense tasks. With normal day to day use I can get around 5-6 hrs of screen-on time, for reference I get around 7-8 hrs on my iPhone 13. The iPhone SE gets me through most of the day, with 25% remaining by around 8pm. Let’s talk camera. At this price, I prefer when manufacturers use just one camera and make that one camera as good as possible. The iPhone SE features an impressive single 12mp f1.8 wide angle lens that combined with the A15’s image signal processing, creates for a camera that is truly best in class. Photos are rich in detail, colours are saturated while still being true to life and skin tones are natural. It is also the best video camera at it’s price. A15 chip also allows for new iOS camera features, such as photographic styles. No night mode though. The iPhone SE formula comes down to the following: old design, top of line chip, fantastic camera, attractive price. This makes for a phone that that will last for many years to come and for the price it is easy to recommend! The only comprise with the iPhone SE is it’s design. It is not a bad design, thought I do wish the screen was larger, I look forward a more modern iPhone SE redesign in the future.
