Delhi NCR witnessed a rapid escalation in anti-pollution measures on Saturday, as authorities enforced the strictest curbs under Stage-IV of GRAP, after air quality plunged into the severe category.

What is concerning is the speed of deterioration. Just hours after Stage-III restrictions were activated, pollution levels worsened sharply, prompting the Commission for Air Quality Management to invoke Stage-IV restrictions with immediate effect across the NCR. By late Saturday night, the situation turned even more alarming. Air quality slipped from severe to severe plus, with the Air Quality Index touching 460 by midnight, according to Central Pollution Control Board data.

Commission for Air Quality Management attributed the sudden spike in pollution to Slow Wind Speeds, a Stagnant Atmosphere, and Unfavourable Weather Conditions, which trapped pollutants close to the ground and prevented their dispersion.

GRAP-IV Restrictions

1. Complete ban on construction and demolition activities
2. Suspension of stone crusher operations, all mining related activities
3. Classes up to Class 5 to operate in hybrid mode
4. Strict ban on movement of: BS-III petrol, BS-IV diesel four-wheelers
5. Vehicle restrictions applicable in: Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddha Nagar

These steps come over and above restrictions already in place under GRAP Stages I, II, and III. The Commission for Air Quality Management has also instructed pollution control boards, civic bodies, and enforcement agencies to ensure strict compliance with the new measures.
