When I was finishing up my residency in 1997, one of the first calls I made was to CompHealth. I had heard about it, I think, through a mailer. They still did those then. I was looking to get some jobs out on the West Coast or in Mountain West, and most of these places didn’t actually hire doctors as part-timers, but they did hire what they said was locums doctors. I had no idea what a locums doctor was, so I did my own research and I found out that it’s kind of the thing to do for me. It would fit in to what I wanted to do. So I joined CompHealth then, and I’ve stuck with CompHealth ever since.

I think that locum tenens really fits in with the ebb and flow of life in terms of there are times in which you are uber available, and you can work hard, and there are times where you just don’t want to work. You want to do other things. I think that the misconception is that you can’t make locums into a full-time lifestyle. I like to work hard when I’m available to work. When I am not available to work, I want to be free, and if you are good at finding a schedule that works for you, you can actually do extremely well as a full-time locums doctor.

CompHealth has always given me what I wanted a locums agency to give me. It’s given me fantastic services. It’s given me jobs when they’re available, and it has served me well. And so I have never felt the need to actually leave. It would be like leaving a family member.
